A Study for the Prevention of Drug Abuse in Middle and High School Students

Abstract
The purpose of the study is to investigate desirable role of the teachers for prevention of drug abuse in adolescent. It is based on questionnaires collected from School Health Nurses (38 cases) and Consulting Teachers (38 cases) in Incheon and Bucheon region.
The study reveals that the School Health Nurses group has much more professional knowledge about abused drugs than the Consulting Teachers group. The drugs include analgesics, tranquilizer, sedatives and hypnotics, stimulants. hallucinogens, narcotics, antitussive, antihistamines, solvents and diuretics.
There appears some different attitudes for their counseling work.
The School Health Nurses give more importance to the understanding of the psychology of the student and less to the knowledge of the abused drugs. On the other hand the Consulting Teachers who take charge of the juvenile delinquent, especially drug abused students, are opposite.
As a result both group point out that Teacher in Charge of the Class is the most appropriate person (43.4%) ; then the School Health Nurse (30.3%) ; then the Consulting Teacher (17.1%). This somewhat absurd result indicates how complicated a counseling work is ; as the drug abuse is caused not only by psychological problems but also by ignorance of the drugs.
We regard this phenomenon as a sign of professional inability in both groups and suggest several measures to improve their role.
